SWIFA (Southwest Intercollegiate Fencing Association) has reorganized itself as a non-profit association, without any interruption in the sequence of SWIFA tournaments. However, there are three different sources of information about SWIFA, with the possibility that any one might have the most recent information.

Regional Youth Circuit (current national program)
The term "Regional Youth Circuit" (RYC) is ambiguous. It refers both to a USFA national program and an earlier program independently started in the Southwest Section which inspired the national program. The first known reference to a national program by the USFA appears in the agenda for the July 3, 1999 meeting of the USFA Board of Directors, where the Tournament Committee Report states: "This coming season the committee will develop and expand on the concept for regional Youth tournaments. The goal of that program is that it be initiated in the 2000-2001 season." The second known reference at a national level by the USFA appears in the agenda for the February 17, 2001 meeting of the USFA Board of Directors, where the Youth Development Committee Report states: "This committee will encourage and give guidance for the development of Regional Youth Circuits (RYC) by the Sections. With careful planning, these RYC's can be combined with the NAC's to provide increased quality in the training of our youth fencers. With higher caliber fencing at the regional tournaments, youth fencers will be able to increase their skills (at less expense) before advancing to the national circuit. The success of the Southwest Section's RYC, which has been developed over the last three years, is evidence that this system can work. At a recent RYC in Houston on January 6, 2001 there were 26 fencers in the Y10 mixed foil event, 33 in Y14 foil and even 6 in Y12 sabre. The level of fencing has been very good and these tournaments have been providing excellent preparation for national level competition. Southwest section youth fencers have been consistently placing within the top 16 at national youth tournaments without the need to attend every NAC." |

Regional Youth Circuit (historical Southwest Section program)
The term "Regional Youth Circuit" (RYC) is ambiguous. It refers both to a USFA national program and an earlier program independently started in the Southwest Section which inspired the national program. The first known reference to a Southwest Section RYC tournament is a February 21-22, 1997 tournament held at the Texas Fencing Academy. The old index of 1996-1997 information for this is still available, albeit with some links which broke years ago. |
