Southwest Section Summer 2009 Newsletter	Welcome to the 2009-2010 fencing season. To help keep the fencing public up-to-date with any news, the Southwest Section officers are sending out a quarterly newsletter. Click here to access the newsletter in the Archive of the Southwest Section.
2009 Section Meeting Voters	A list of the Southwest Section members eligible to vote at the annual meeting of the Southwest Section is available. Proxy forms for voters not voting in person must be presented to the Section Secretary by 1 PM on the Saturday of the meeting. (There are two proxy forms on this sheet, and it would be appreciated if sheets were cut in half already when presented.) Please contact Jaimie Ailshire at secretary@southwestfencing.org if you have items you would like added to the agenda.
Southwest Sectional Championships	Information and pre-registration for the 2009 Southwest Sectional Championships can now be found at askFRED. Regular price pre-registration is available, with pre-payment, through the end of April 3rd. If paid within one additional week thereafter, there is a $40 late fee. Thereafter, there is a $60 late fee. You must also complete and sign the waiver of liability and present it at check in. The presentation of the awards for the top finishers in the Southwest Section Circuit Cup and the annual Southwest Section business meeting (open to the Section membership) will also be held at this tournament.
SSCC 2008-09 Calendar	The following dates have been designated for 2008-2009 SSCC tournaments: September 20/21, 2008 – South Texas – Austin Fencers Club November 1/2, 2008– North Texas – Fencing Institute of Texas January 10/11, 2009 – Gulf Coast – Young Elites of Houston February 21/22, 2009 – Ark-La-Miss – Rose Condon Committee The Oklahoma Division has chosen not to designate a tournament for the 2008-2009 season. However, the SSCC Commission feels it is important for the structure of the SSCC to have five designated events. Therefore, a fifth event will be designated by bid. The bid form can be downloaded here. Bids are due June 30th, 2008 and a decision will be posted by July 15th.

Section Meeting Agenda	Several years ago, the SW Section membership voted to forgo mass mailings to notify members of Sectional Championships and determined that notification would be posted on the Section Web site. Sectional Championships and Qualifiers are scheduled for May 3-4, 2008, in El Paso, Texas. The annual meeting of the SW Section will be held after fencing ends on Saturday, May 3, at the venue. A meeting agenda is here. Thereafter, pre-registration costs double until the end of March 28th. Thereafter, at-the-door registration costs triple.
North Texas Grand Prix	Pre-registration for the the North Texas Division's SSCC tournament, the North Texas Grand Prix, is at askFRED. Base price pre-registration ends January 20th. Registration thereafter is registration fee (and unchanged event fee).
Rose Condon Memorial	Pre-registration for the Ark-La-Miss Division's SSCC tournament, the Rose Condon Memorial, is at askFRED. Early bird/student discount registration ($5 off each event) ends at the end of Dec. 11. Base price pre-registration ends at the end of Feb. 2. Late price pre-registration ($20 plus $5/event extra) ends at the end of Feb. 21. Thereafter, pre-registration and at-the-door registration costs $50 plus $10/event more than base price pre-registration.

Gulf Coast SSCC	Pre-registration for the Gulf Coast Texas Division's SSCC tournament, the "Gulf Coast SSCC", is at askFRED. Base price pre-registration ends 8 AM September 21st. Thereafter, late pre-registration costs $15 per person and $5 per event more until 8 AM September 28th. Thereafter, at-the-door registration costs an additional $30 per person and $10 per event.

Don't Fence Me In	Pre-registration for the Gulf Coast Texas Division's SSCC tournament, the Don't Fence Me In, is at askFRED. Base price pre-registration (event fees plus $25 for adult and $15 for youth) ends either midnight the morning or midnight the evening of Feb. 23 (tournament publicity materials are ambiguous). Thereafter, pre-registration and at-the-door registration costs event fees plus $45.

SSCC Information	The first SSCC event of the 2006-2007 season was held in Austin, Texas, September 30th and October 1st. Full results are up on askFRED.net. Click HERE to see the SSCC Commissioner’s write-up about the tournament. SSCC Point standings are also undergoing revision, based upon new formulations approved by the SWS Executive Committee, and will be available shortly. Information about the second SSCC event of the season, to be held in Dallas, November 4 and 5 can be found here.

Wilson-Silvia Memorial	The Wilson-Silvia Memorial, originally Feb. 18-19, experienced a winter advisory in the normally temperate Dallas on the second day. The North Texas Division has announced that the Sunday events have been postponed until March 4th and 5th. Pre-registration is staying open at askFRED. (This makes the Saturday results [Webmaster's note: When this news item was originally written, Saturday results were originally visible at http://askfred.net/Results/results.php?tournament_id=1484, but this has vanished in the meantime] on askFRED a little puzzling, because the date adjustment on askFRED makes them appear to be results from fencing three weeks in the future!).

Crescent City Open	The Louisiana Division reports: Due to devastation of the fencing community, loss of equipment, and lack of hospitality facilities for our out-of-town guests, the 2006 Crescent City Open has been cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience and sincerely hope that fencers will join us next year for the 2007 CCO. USFA Web Site Changes	The USFA is still in the midst of the throes of converting from their old to their new layout for their Web site, http://www.usfencing.org/. Many things which used to be easy to find on the Web site have now become hard to find, or possibly completely missing. There has been no announcement that anything formerly on the old site will be permanently abandoned, but it might take quite a while before everything is where it belongs. In the meantime, it is still possible to view the USFA Web site as it used to appear before reorganization. Instead of the regular URL, use http://oldsite.usfencing.org/.
NAC A (Miami)	The USFA has requested this information be posted on section Web sites: IMPORTANT INFORMATION - NAC A MIAMI NAC A Miami Greyhound Shuttle Schedule: Wyndham Hotel, Comfort Suites, La Quinta and Crowne Hotel: There is no Shuttle Service on Thursday, October 6, 2005 Shuttle Service begins each Competition day at 6:30 am and runs continuously until the end of competition. On Friday, October 7 and Monday, October 10 - expect traffic delays and plan accordingly - you still must make your scheduled check in time. There is very limited Concessions at the Fair/Expo Center. Please make sure you have enough food/beverages to get you through each tournament day.
Equipment Lost in Katrina	The Web site of the Louisiana Division is soliciting reports from Louisiana Division fencers, and clubs too, about fencing equipment lost because of Hurricane Katrina. (A recent message stated that this applied to Rita too.) Forms are available on the Web site. This information will be used in a coordinated effort to solicit donations to replace the lost equipment.
Katrina, and the Louisiana Division	The impact of Hurricane Katrina on the people and property of the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico is well-known. The fencers among them had no special immunity. The Southeast Section and particularly our own Southwest Section were badly damaged. In our Section, that coastline is partially Ark-La-Miss Division (Mississippi) and mostly Louisiana Division. Apparently, in recent times all fencers in extreme southern Mississippi are actually fencing as members of the Louisiana Division, so in the Section the members and clubs of only the Louisiana Division were hit by Katrina. Cities and people of the Ark-La-Miss Division, Gulf Coast Texas Division, North Texas Division, and South Texas Division are known to be supporting major groups of evacuees. For a while after Katrina hit, the Louisiana Division Web site was still operating, but did not yet have updates to reflect the calamity. (Such members of the administration of the Louisiana Division as had already gotten to safety had had more pressing matters to handle than a Web site.) It now does have information updated to reflect Katrina. In the interim, the Ark-La-Miss Division Web site had, and now still does have, pages dedicated to what is known about Louisiana Division fencers, clubs, and offers of assistance for Louisiana Division fencers. Please read these pages to read, or even to contribute, the latest information about the hoped-for safety of the Louisiana Division fencers, and what you might be able to do to help the Louisiana Division fencer community you may have in your own city during this evacuation.

Gerard Poujardieu, Jr.	The Southwest Section notes the loss of Maître J. Gerard Poujardieu, Jr. (1940-2004), early the morning of Dec. 27th. His direct and indirect contributions to fencing in general and to the fencing of the Southwest Section are too great to be described here. A memorial service will be held at Salle Poujardieu on Sunday, January 2nd, 2005 starting at 11:30 AM. More details are available at the Salle Poujardieu Web site on the "News" page. Southwest Sectional Circuit Cup Planning Meeting	Southwest Sectional Circuit Cup Planning Meeting October 23rd, 2004. To be held after the end of fencing on Saturday at the Longhorn Open, Austin, Texas. Please note: This is NOT a SWS Executive Committee meeting. It is a meeting to discuss the direction and operations of the SSCC with the goal of standardizing tournament operations and sharing tournament operations strategies. A representative of all current and future LOC is requested, in addition to Divisional representatives. For details, see the SSCC news page.
Referee Seminar, Testing, and Examination	A referee seminar and opportunity to take the referee tests will be held in conjunction with St. Mark's Open and Youth 14 and Under tournament, October 16-17. The cost for the seminar is $15, including the pizza and drink. If you plan to attend, contact Amgad Badawi, or Brenda Waddoups so there will be enough handouts and pizza. The following two days will have opportunities to be examined for foil and épée (but not saber) referee ratings up to 7, depending of course on the refereeing difficulty provided by the fencing.

PAFA	Information about the October Pan American Fencing Academy seminar. The seminar includes sabre coaching and USFCA testing.
Armorer's Clinic	An armorer's clinic will be held in conjunction with the Baylor Fencing Club's 2004 Adelman Memorial Tournament. The clinic will be given by national-level armorer Ovy Waddoups. The clinic will be held the Saturday evening of the tournament, September 18th, starting at 4 PM. The tournament will be in Russell Gym on the Baylor campus in Waco, TX. Bring your comments to the meeting or send them to Jerry at redlandsfencing@earthlink.net A bit on where this is coming from: Bob, Thanks. I hope maybe this can get us on the road to having an organized structured program for referee development, and training in our Section. I fully expect this to be a first step for us. I just wanted to get the process started so that everyone is one the same page and that this does not become a political football or an ego/power tool. I was getting worried that this issue was starting to be used in some Divisions as a battle ground for personal agendas. If we make sure every Division is involved and has input I hope we will have a better chance to create a strong and successful program that could become the model for other Sections in the USFA. Lord knows ( and the FOC knows) it is really needed. I would really like your support on this. Not so much this specific program but one that has at least the concept of broad input and control and can hopefully go beyond personal interest. Again my only hope is that this proposal will get some thing going for the next year. Again thanks for your help in this and getting it out to the Section. Jerry
