Divisions

Last updated October 31, 2007.

This page is the on-line repository of useful information and pointers to information about the seven divisions within the Southwest Section.

Ark-La-Miss Division:
  • Formed in or after 1982.
  • Geographic area defined by Bylaws (final section, "Area Included in the Ark-La-Miss Division") to be whatever parts of the three states the USFA specifies. Conventionally thought to be Arkansas minus the northwestern corner plus Louisiana north of the 31st parallel plus Mississippi minus some portion south of the 31st parallel.
  • Area clubs (belonging, or recently belonging, to the Division).
  • Upcoming tournaments and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws. Note that these Bylaws may still predate the 2004 Annual Meeting, but the 2004 Annual Meeting amended the Bylaws in certain ways. Interesting selected facts:
    • Elections are held at the Annual Meeting "after the division championships and ... before the thirty-first of the same month" (Art. V 1st para.).
    • Officers' terms are from election to election (Art. IV last para.).
Border Texas Division:
  • Formed in or before 1973.
  • Geographic area (Bylaw text missing as of Aug. 29, 2006 due to Web site reorganization) defined by Bylaws (Article I, last paragraph) to be 10 Texas counties (although the eastern half of Winkler and Ward Counties are also claimed by the Plains Texas Division of the Rocky Mountain Section) and 9 New Mexico counties. Often thought to extend nowhere near so far east into Texas or so far west into New Mexico. (See map.)
  • Area clubs not listed, but see links on home page.
  • Upcoming tournaments and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws (Bylaw text missing as of Aug. 29, 2006 due to Web site reorganization). Interesting selected facts:
    • Elections are held at the Annual Meeting in April (Art. VI Sect. 1).
    • Officers' terms are from August through July (Art. IV 1st para.).
Gulf Coast Division:
  • Formed in 1949 by splitting the Texas Division into the Gulf Coast Texas (apparently not its ititial name) and the North Texas Divisions. Decreased in size by the creation in 1965 of the South Texas Division from the Gulf Coast Texas Division.
  • Geographic area defined by Bylaws to have specific geographic boundaries. (See map.)
  • Area clubs (belonging, or recently belonging, to the Division).
  • Upcoming tournaments and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of 1998, 1999 and 2000 General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws. Interesting selected facts:
    • Elections are held at the Annual Meeting after fencing ends on the first day of Divisionals.
    • Officers' terms are from August through July.
Louisiana Division:
  • Formed in or before 1973.
  • Geographic area not defined by any documents available to the public. Generally thought to be Louisiana south of the 31st parallel plus some portion of Mississippi south of the 31st parallel.
  • Area clubs not listed, but see links on home page.
  • Upcoming tournaments and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of 1998, 1999 and 2000 General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws not online. Interesting selected facts:
    • Officer elections are held at some sort of annual meeting.
    • Officers' terms are from August through July.
North Texas Division:
  • Formed in 1949 by splitting the Texas Division into the Gulf Coast Texas (apparently not its ititial name) and the North Texas Divisions. Decreased in size by the creation on September 13, 1950 of the Plains Texas Division from the North Texas Division.
  • Geographic area defined by Bylaws (Article VI) to be whatever the USFA specifies. Generally thought to be the northeast corner of Texas bounded on the south by the Gulf Coast Texas Division and bounded on the west at some point well short of the Plains Texas Division of the Rocky Mountain Section.
  • Area clubs.
  • Upcoming tournaments and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws. Interesting selected facts:
    • Officer elections are held at the Annual Meeting of the "Division Council" (the Executive Committee and the Division voting members) (Art. VII (b)), other Executive Committee members (the club representatives) at the Annual Meeting of the Division (which seems to be synonymous with the Annual Meeting of the "Division Council") (Art. VII (c) 2), in the spring (Art. X (a)).
    • Officers' terms are from August through July (Art. VII (f)).
Oklahoma Division:
  • Formed in or before 1973.
  • Geographic area defined by Bylaws (Article I, last section) to be whatever the USFA specifies. Generally thought to be the state of Oklahoma plus the northwest corner of Arkansas.
  • Area clubs (belonging to the Division).
  • Upcoming tournaments and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of 1998, 1999 and 2000 General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws. Interesting selected facts:
    • Elections are held at the annual Division meeting "at the end of the Division fencing season" (Art. VIII 1st para.).
    • Terms of office not yet located in Bylaws, possibly meaning Officers' terms are from election to election.
South Texas Division:
  • Formed in 1965 from the Gulf Coast Texas Division.
  • Geographic area not defined by any documents available to the public. Generally thought to be the middle of Texas extending south to to Mexico, bounded on most of the east by the Gulf Coast Texas Division, meeting the Border Texas Division on the west, meeting the Plais Texas Division of the Rocky Mountain Section on the northwest, and extending at least part way to the Oklahoma border between the Plains Texas Division on the west and the North Texas Division on the east.
  • Area clubs not listed.
  • Upcoming tournaments (there still is an earlier calendar but it is no longer the official South Texas calendar) and results of past ones.
  • Minutes of 1998, 1999 and 2000 General Membership meetings.
  • Division Bylaws. Interesting selected facts:
    • Elections are held at the Annual Meeting in May (Art. VI Sect. 1).
    • Officers' terms are from August through July (Art. IV Sect. 1).

Alabama Division of the Southeast Section:
  • Formed in or before 1973.

  • Formed on September 13, 1950 from the North Texas Division.
  • Geographic area stated to have been defined by the USFA to have specific geographic boundaries. (See map.)
